CAN CHILDREN WITH READING PROBLEMS STILL BE ABLE TO OVERCOME THEIR DIFFICULTIES?

Yes, but only if they are identified early and provided with direct -systematic, explicit and intensive instruction in phonemic awareness, precise phonics instruction, reading fluency, vocabulary, spelling and reading comprehension strategies. Early identification, coupled with a comprehensive early reading intervention can reduce the percentage of children reading below the basic level in fourth grade from the current national average of 38% to less than 6%.

At least 20 million school age children suffer from reading failure but only a small fraction of these children receive early intervention education services. By putting in place well-designed, evidence-based early identification screenings and early intervention programs, the number of children suffering from reading failure would be reduced by at least two-thirds.

WHEN DO THEY UNDERGO TESTS?

A child can be professionally diagnosed with learning difficulties associated to reading as early as 5  years old. Most schools are reluctant to test children before third grade and often encourage parents to wait and see if their child will outgrow his reading, writing, spelling difficulties. Research proves that WAITING is the WORST thing a parent could ever do. One of the most common reading difficulties ever identified is Dyslexia. Part of the line-up is Optilexia, Dyspraxia, Dysgraphia and Dyscalculia. If it's Dyslexia, a child will not outgrow his or her difficulties. However it takes less time to fix the reading and spelling difficulties when Dyslexia is discovered at age 6 than when it is discovered until age 9 or 19 nor even older. Dyslexia cannot be officially diagnosed using one single test. That's because dyslexia may vary from mild to moderate, severe to profound. Enough evidence of dyslexia must be justified before putting a child through the testing process ( Vail,Hall and Ryon). Parents, please be aware that subjecting your child to the right test is only half the battle. But with the conviction and courage to let your child undergo such test. you have already moved closer to overcoming what could have been a lifetime adversity and stigma. Nothing could ever stop you from experiencing success into your journey by putting your child into a researched-based Reading program with professionally trained teachers and staff eligible for providing a tested and proven literacy reading system.
